Ben Sulayem Secures Second Term as FIA President in Uncontested Tashkent Vote

A French court review in February will test the FIA rule that left rivals ineligible.

Overview

  • Despite being the sole eligible candidate, Mohammed Ben Sulayem received about 91.5% of votes from member clubs at the General Assembly in Uzbekistan.
  • Rival applicants Laura Villars and Tim Mayer could not qualify under statutes requiring a vice-presidential slate from all global regions, with the only eligible South American, Fabiana Ecclestone, aligned to Ben Sulayem’s list.
  • Villars’ legal challenge continues in Paris, with a full hearing set for February 16, 2026, that could review, challenge, or annul the election.
  • The FIA said the vote complied with its statutes and highlighted a financial turnaround under Ben Sulayem, from a €24.0m loss in 2021 to a €4.7m operating result in 2024 and a €4.4m forecast for 2025.
  • Members also confirmed key leadership posts, electing Malcolm Wilson as Deputy President for Sport, Tim Shearman for Mobility and Tourism, and Carmelo Sanz de Barros as Senate President.
