Ben & Jerry's independent board of directors has called for a 'permanent and immediate ceasefire' in Gaza, marking one of the few instances a U.S. company has publicly supported an end to the Israel-Hamas war.
The call for peace is 'consistent with the company's history and values,' according to board chair Anuradha Mittal, who also criticized the corporate world's silence on the conflict.
The ice cream maker has a history of political activism, having previously stopped sales in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, which led to a clash with parent company Unilever.
Unilever sold the Israeli branch of Ben & Jerry's to a local operator following the company's stance on Israel, leading to a lawsuit that was later resolved.
Other global brands like Starbucks and McDonald's have faced pressure and boycotts over their perceived stances on the conflict.
