Beloved Blue Elephant from 'Sendung mit der Maus' Celebrates 50th Anniversary

The iconic character, introduced in 1975 as a playful companion to the Mouse, has become a symbol of curiosity and friendship in German children's television.

  • The Blue Elephant first appeared on January 5, 1975, in 'Sendung mit der Maus,' created to bring a playful, contrasting dynamic to the Mouse's logical and problem-solving nature.
  • The character, designed by Friedrich Streich, was intentionally made smaller than the Mouse and colored blue to symbolize a complementary yet distinct personality.
  • Initially introduced as a rival to the Mouse, the Elephant quickly evolved into a beloved companion, embodying the role of a curious and spontaneous 'younger sibling.'
  • In 2007, the Elephant was given its own spin-off show, 'Die Sendung mit dem Elefanten,' aimed at younger children aged three to six, featuring interactive and educational content.
  • To mark the 50th anniversary, special birthday episodes are airing on KiKA and WDR, with additional content available on the ARD Mediathek and the WDR website.
