Overview

  • Belgian defence and foreign ministries announced on July 30 that a plane carrying €600,000 in food and medical supplies will fly to Jordan and stand by for airdrops into Gaza under Amman’s coordination.
  • Belgium joins France, Spain and Britain in the multinational airlift effort designed to reach civilians cut off by Israel’s total blockade since March.
  • On July 29 the World Food Programme, UNICEF and the Food and Agriculture Organization warned that Gaza is on the brink of a full-scale famine.
  • Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot said airdrops are only a first step and urged Israeli authorities to establish unimpeded land corridors for sustained relief.
  • Experts advising the UN cautioned that without immediate, unobstructed ground access, air operations alone will not stave off mass starvation.
