Belgium Convenes Security Meeting After Drone Sighting Halts Flights at Brussels Airport

Officials are examining whether the brief shutdown fits a broader wave of unexplained drones targeting airports and military sites.

Overview

  • Air traffic at Brussels Zaventem was suspended around 20:00 after an unidentified drone was detected, according to air traffic control provider Skeyes.
  • All departures and arrivals were paused and inbound flights were rerouted to Liège, with Charleroi also suspending traffic as a precaution.
  • RTBF reported that flights at the affected airports resumed shortly after 21:00 following safety checks.
  • Liège Airport reported drone presence and diversions as Belgium records recent sightings over Kleine-Brogel, Elsenborn and Marche-en-Famenne.
  • Defence Minister Theo Francken has said drones over military bases appear intended to spy on F-16s and munitions, and Prime Minister Bart De Wever has called a Security Council session for Thursday.
