Belgium Briefly Halts Liège Flights After New Drone Sighting as Germany Sends Air Force Specialists

Officials are fast-tracking airspace restrictions following an assessment that the incursions are coordinated.

Overview

  • Liège Airport was closed for about 30 minutes this morning after a reported drone sighting around 7:30 a.m., according to airspace manager Skeyes.
  • The government plans a royal decree to bar unauthorized drones over sensitive sites, and it is preparing the NASC surveillance center to be fully operational by 1 January 2026.
  • Defence Minister Theo Francken said hostile drones should be shot down “if possible” and called the incidents a professional, coordinated effort to sow panic.
  • Germany’s defence ministry said advance Air Force units have arrived in Belgium to assess the situation and coordinate with Belgian forces.
  • Earlier disruptions this week included suspensions at Brussels and Liège with about 80 flight cancellations, and reported sightings near sensitive bases such as Kleine-Brogel.
