Belgian and Spanish Kings Inaugurate Europalia’s Goya Showcase in Brussels

Loans from leading Spanish museums anchor a 236-work survey using Goya to frame two centuries of art.

Overview

  • The exhibition Luz y sombra: Goya y el realismo español opens to the public on October 8 at Bozar in Brussels and runs through January 11, marking the first Goya-focused show presented in Belgium.
  • The inauguration featured the monarchs of Belgium and Spain with Spain’s foreign minister José Manuel Albares and Belgian deputy prime minister Maxime Prévot.
  • The presentation includes 74 works by Goya within a total of 236 pieces, with loans from the Prado, Sorolla, Picasso, Artium and the Bilbao Fine Arts Museum.
  • The curatorial narrative places Goya in dialogue with Spanish realism through themes such as tauromaquia, flamenco, Semana Santa and carnival across eras from regenerationism to the Civil War and the late dictatorship.
  • An immersive installation by filmmaker Albert Serra titled Tauromaquia, drawn from footage with matador Pablo Aguado during Tardes de soledad (2024), complements a wider program featuring about 300 Spanish artists across music, theatre and film.
