Chaoyang District People’s Court ordered Malaysia Airlines to pay more than 2.9 million yuan to each of eight families for death compensation, funeral costs and emotional distress. The eight passengers were declared legally deceased, while 47 related lawsuits were settled and withdrawn and 23 cases remain pending. Some relatives called the ruling a bitter outcome because compensation requires a court declaration of death they have been reluctant to seek. Malaysia says the hunt will resume on December 30 under a renewed no-find, no-fee deal with Ocean Infinity for a targeted, time-limited search. MH370 vanished in 2014 with 239 people aboard and has not been found despite extensive searches, with most passengers being Chinese.
