Beijing Bans Possession and Storage of Drones Inside City Limits

The municipal government said it tightened rules after a June aircraft crash and will offer buybacks, scrapping subsidies or relocation options to help owners comply before enforcement begins.

Overview

  • The revised rules make it illegal to possess or store drones and key components within Beijing and give authorities power to confiscate devices and fine individuals or companies.
  • The ban takes effect on November 15, 2026, and officials say owners will be able to turn in drones at designated buyback sites, scrap them for a smaller subsidy, or move them out of the city.
  • Beijing had already required real-name registration for existing drones and halted sales on May 1, 2026, and officials cited a late-June small aircraft crash into a skyscraper as a reason for tightening rules further.
  • The prohibition covers the municipality’s administrative area and does not change national rules outside Beijing, where outdoor drone flying remains allowed under real-name registration; bringing drones into Beijing is already banned.
  • The measures chiefly affect residents, hobbyists and businesses that used Beijing for storage or operations and are likely to push owners to sell, scrap or relocate equipment and to shift any commercial drone activity outside the city.
