Overview
- The Brewers Association of India has asked DPIIT to defer BIS requirements for imported aluminium cans to April 1, 2026 and to permit interim imports from suppliers that have filed BIS applications.
- Domestic manufacturers Ball Beverage Packaging India and Can-Pack India say they are at full capacity and need 6–12 months to add new production lines.
- A Quality Control Order effective April 1, 2025 mandates BIS certification for cans, and certification for foreign vendors can take months, delaying imports.
- The government previously allowed imports without BIS certification through September 30, 2025, which brewers say is insufficient to cover the shortfall.
- BAI estimates a deficit of 12–13 crore 500 ml cans that could cost central and state coffers Rs 1,200–1,300 crore in lost revenue, with 500 ml cans accounting for nearly 20% of beer sales.
