Overview

  • Sixteen people have required hospitalization after consuming cucumbers distributed by Fresh Start Produce Sales between April 29 and May 19.
  • FDA testing confirmed the outbreak strain in a sample from a Pennsylvania distribution center and uncovered multiple additional salmonella strains matching government database records.
  • Target has added over 40 cucumber-based products to its recall list, and retailers including Walmart plus specialty distributors have pulled whole cucumbers, salads, salsas and vegetable trays.
  • The outbreak was first detected during an April follow-up inspection of last year’s salmonella event, prompting renewed scrutiny of Bedner Growers’ farm and distribution practices.
  • CDC cautions that the true number of sickened consumers may be higher and advises discarding any cucumbers if their source cannot be verified.
