Beauval’s Huan Huan and Yuan Zi to Return to China in November After Health Diagnosis

The move follows Huan Huan’s chronic kidney failure diagnosis, reflecting coordination with Chinese authorities for care in Chengdu.

Overview

  • Zoo officials say the transfer is planned around November 25, 2025, with the pair headed to the Chengdu conservation center for a peaceful retirement.
  • Both pandas are 17 and arrived in France in 2012, with the zoo noting that Huan Huan currently shows normal behavior and a good appetite under close medical monitoring.
  • The early return was decided in consultation with Chinese authorities, and the journey is expected to take place under heavy police protection described as similar to heads of state.
  • Their twin daughters, Huanlili and Yuandudu, born in 2021, will remain at Beauval at least until 2027 to continue public education on giant panda conservation.
  • Beauval is organizing visitor tributes, including a mailbox for messages, as the director signals interest in talks to extend the panda partnership beyond 2027.
