Bears Welcome Indiana Stadium Bill as Cross-Border Push Accelerates

Illinois limits support to infrastructure, not construction.

Overview

  • Indiana Senate Bill 27 was introduced and sent to the Appropriations Committee to create a Northwest Indiana stadium authority empowered to acquire, finance, construct and lease facilities.
  • Governor Mike Braun used his State of the State address to say his administration is working hard to bring the Bears to Indiana.
  • The Bears called Indiana’s legislation a significant milestone, as team leaders and NFL commissioner Roger Goodell recently toured sites in Northwest Indiana and the team-owned parcel in Arlington Heights.
  • Governor J.B. Pritzker reiterated that Illinois will not pay to build a stadium but said the state could assist with surrounding infrastructure needs.
  • The franchise has narrowed its public request to infrastructure funding and property tax certainty, with infrastructure estimates reported around $832 million to $855 million, as Chicago and Arlington Heights continue to make in-state cases.
