Overview

  • A lone female hiker was attacked by a brown bear on July 22 about two miles into the Basher Trail in the Chugach Mountains and called 911 when she could not walk
  • Dispatchers kept the victim on the line for roughly an hour while drones and ground teams triangulated her position before responders arrived
  • Anchorage Fire Department crews and Alaska State Troopers airlifted her to a local hospital, where she is in stable condition with non‐life‐threatening injuries
  • The Alaska Department of Fish and Game has blocked off trails around the Stuckagain Heights area and continues to deploy search teams and drones to find the bear
  • Officials are urging hikers to file trip plans, carry bear spray and make noise on trails to reduce the risk of surprise encounters
