Bear That Bit Shopper in N.J. Dollar General Euthanized After Erratic Roaming

Officers acted under New Jersey’s Category 1 criteria, which trigger euthanasia for bears that threaten public safety.

Overview

  • A 175-pound female black bear entered a Dollar General in Vernon Township on Tuesday afternoon and bit a woman’s leg, leading to a hospital visit for a minor injury reported by police as involving a 90-year-old.
  • Witnesses said the bear had spent hours weaving through traffic along Route 94 and nearby parking lots and was described as behaving abnormally.
  • Local reports said the animal threatened people and pets, including attacking a nearby business owner’s German Shepherd, which was taken to a veterinarian.
  • Bystander Sean Clarkin filmed the encounter and coaxed the bear out of the store before police intervened again.
  • Vernon police had earlier used rubber bullets as a deterrent and later euthanized the bear, and wildlife officials collected the remains for rabies testing with results expected within several days.
