Bear That Attacked Security Guard in Colorado Hotel Kitchen Captured and Euthanized
Officials identify bear by unique chest marking, aggressive behavior seen in hotel security footage; attack serves as reminder to public to be 'bear aware' during active pre-hibernation period.
- A security guard at the St. Regis Aspen Resort in Colorado was attacked by a bear that had wandered in the kitchen. The bear swiped at him and knocked him down, leading to hospitalization for back scratches.
- The bear entered the hotel kitchen through a series of doors near the courtyard. Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) officers, who were unable to capture it immediately due to public safety concerns, later identified and chemically immobilized it.
- The CPW identified the bear that attacked the security guard through security camera footage and its unique chest marking - a distinctive white patch.
- Eight other bears were spotted roaming in downtown Aspen during the search for the offending bear. The incident has prompted officials to remind the public to be 'bear aware' during bears' active pre-hibernation period.
- Following CPW policy, the bear, determined to be a boar, was euthanized. Its body was taken to the CPW Wildlife Health Lab in Fort Collins for necropsy.
