Bear Euthanized After Entering N.J. Dollar General and Biting Shopper

Rabies testing is underway after hours of erratic roaming near Route 94 that included threats to people and pets.

Overview

  • The 175-pound female black bear entered the Dollar General in Vernon Township around 3:45 p.m. on Sept. 16, according to New Jersey Fish and Wildlife.
  • A woman inside the store was injured in the leg and taken to a hospital, with no immediate update on her condition.
  • Video shows customer Sean Clarkin coaxing the animal out of the store before Vernon police used rubber bullets to drive it into nearby woods.
  • Officials said the bear had been weaving through traffic and roaming parking lots for hours and reportedly attacked a local business owner's German Shepherd.
  • Wildlife personnel euthanized the bear and collected its remains for rabies testing, with results expected in three to five days.
