Bear Enters Tahoe Home, Injures 87-Year-Old Couple During Early-Morning Encounter

Wildlife officials urge residents to secure attractants during the bears’ pre-denning feeding phase.

Overview

  • The homeowner encountered the animal in his garage around 4:30 a.m. off Kingsbury Grade near Stateline, Nevada.
  • The bear scratched his hand, followed him inside, scratched the woman, then exited the house on its own.
  • Both 87-year-olds were treated for minor injuries and released from a hospital, the Nevada Department of Wildlife said.
  • NDOW advises bear-resistant trash cans, locked doors and windows, and removing food, bird feeders and pet food, noting roughly 90% of encounters start with exposed trash.
  • Local outlets reported the bear weighed nearly 300 pounds, and officials have not reported capturing or killing the animal.
