BCDC Limits Weekday Access to Richmond-San Rafael Bridge Bike Path

Commission approved a three-year pilot that restricts crossings Monday through Thursday mornings as an emergency lane with a shuttle service during closures.

Local 261 members and business groups held a rally near the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge toll plaza during rush hour on May 14, 2025, to protest the bike lane, which they say is causing traffic jams.

Overview

  • The three-year pilot starting this October confines bike and pedestrian crossings to 2 p.m. Thursday through 11 p.m. Sunday.
  • During weekday closure periods, the restored shoulder will serve as a breakdown lane to ease traffic incidents and support emergency responders.
  • A free shuttle service will carry cyclists and pedestrians across the bridge when the path is closed to maintain active transportation links.
  • Metropolitan Transportation Commission data from November 2024 recorded an average of 140 weekday and 360 weekend bike crossings, with 85% of trips for recreation.
  • Bike advocacy groups and 88% of 350 public submissions opposed the weekday limits, warning the changes could exclude disabled and overnight users.
