BC SPCA Takes Custody of 33 Cats and Dogs From Nanaimo Neglect Case

This coordinated multi-centre response aims to manage treatment, behaviour assessment, eventual adoption of rescued animals.

Overview

  • The BC SPCA removed 33 animals from a Nanaimo property after investigators identified unsanitary conditions and uncontrolled breeding between July 17 and 21.
  • Rescued animals include two pitbull terrier mix mothers with a total of 16 puppies, four kittens and a mix of adult cats and dogs.
  • All animals have received flea and parasite treatments and been allocated to SPCA centres in Nanaimo, Parksville and qathet for ongoing care.
  • A puppy with a growing lump on its head remains under close veterinary monitoring with follow-up assessments scheduled.
  • SPCA staff plan to wean the youngest three-week-old puppies and make them available for adoption in about five weeks.
