B.C. Lifts Evacuation Alerts for August Lake and Young Creek Wildfires

A shift to milder weather enabled crews to contain key Princeton-area fires, allowing authorities to lift evacuation alerts.

Overview

  • The Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen rescinded evacuation alerts for about 30 properties near August Lake after the wildfire was held.
  • The August Lake fire is listed as “being held” at 14 hectares in size, down from posing a direct threat to nearby homes.
  • Authorities also lifted the evacuation alert near Cathedral Provincial Park as the Young Creek wildfire no longer endangered the area.
  • The BC Wildfire Service reports 67 active fires across the province, with 40 blazes declared out in the past week.
  • Local stakeholders including the Princeton Golf Club welcomed the alert lifts and praised firefighting and air support efforts.
