B.C. Lets Learner Knowledge Test Be Taken Online

ICBC presents the change as a step to free licensing-office capacity to enable online renewals and replacements in 2027

Overview

  • The provincial government and ICBC introduced an online option for the Class 5–8 learner knowledge test, which took effect Tuesday, June 9, 2026 and covers passenger vehicle and motorcycle applicants.
  • Applicants must use a computer with a working camera and a secure internet connection, and the test is continuously monitored by a contracted proctoring provider, Neumo, with the webcam on for the entire exam.
  • The online test uses the same 50-question bank and the same passing score of 40 correct answers as the in-person exam, and people who pass still must visit an ICBC office for identity confirmation, a vision test and a photo.
  • Commercial licence applicants for Class 1–4 remain required to take the knowledge test in person, and ICBC says the online option carries a reported $15 fee and requires applicants to be at least 16 years old.
  • ICBC says the move will improve access for rural and remote residents and reduce in-person demand at licensing offices while the corporation plans to introduce online renewals and replacements starting in 2027, though the change may leave some applicants facing a digital divide.
