B.C. Heat Wave Sets Daily Records as Air-Quality Alerts Expand

Environment Canada flags health risks with mid-30s heat forecast through Thursday.

An early season hot spell set a number of new temperature records in B.C. and Alberta over the past few days, including Lytton, B.C. where the mercury hit 39.3 C on Sunday, making it the hottest spot in the country, breaking a record set two years ago.

Overview

  • Heat warnings are in effect for the Boundary region, the North Coast, the Fraser Canyon, and the North and South Thompson, with highs in the mid-30s and overnight lows near 18 C.
  • A ridge of high pressure is driving the event, and more than a dozen daily records fell Monday, including 35.6 C in Clearwater and 33.6 C in Quesnel.
  • The BC Wildfire Service reports fuels are highly susceptible and more than 160 wildfires are burning across the province.
  • Smoke from active fires has triggered air-quality advisories across central and northeastern B.C., and forecasters say the haze may persist until Thursday.
  • The Mine Creek wildfire about 44 km northeast of Hope is out of control at roughly 105 hectares, visible from Highway 5 but not threatening structures or roads.
