B.C. Halts Active Search for Grizzly in Bella Coola School Attack

Forensic exclusions prompted a shift from trapping to local monitoring.

Overview

  • DNA and other forensic tests excluded four grizzlies trapped on Dec. 3, including an adult female and three young.
  • With bears entering denning season, officers removed trapping equipment after five days without new sightings.
  • A full-time conservation officer remains stationed in Bella Coola to monitor bear activity, with more officers available if required.
  • The four captured bears will be relocated within their home range away from the community.
  • The two-week response involved 24 officers who hand-delivered samples to a University of Alberta lab, after an attack that badly injured three students and a staff member.
