B.C. Family Plans Memorial Gathering for Mother and Infant Victims of Campground Tree Collapse

The RCMP and BC Coroners Service continue to investigate the July 31 deaths with no criminality suspected

Overview

  • The fatal incident occurred at Cumberland Lake Park Campground on July 31 when a dead tree roughly 10 to 15 inches in diameter collapsed on 26-year-old Lynae and her five-month-old son, Elias
  • An off-duty paramedic and other bystanders performed CPR as first responders arrived, but the mother died at the scene and the infant later succumbed in hospital
  • The fallen tree, believed to have grown about 20 metres into the woods, has been removed from the site for further examination
  • In a statement released through the RCMP the family expressed heartbreak and gratitude to police, paramedics and beachgoers who tried to save Lynae and Elias and shared a handout photo of the pair
  • The public is invited to a memorial at Comox Marina Park on August 10 at 6 p.m. and donations are being directed to the Nesting Place Society in honour of the victims
