B.C. Election-Day Ballots to Be Counted by Hand

Elections BC said short preparation time and complex logistics for the snap vote prompted the switch to manual counts while absentee and mail ballots are set for a Nov. 6–10 final count.

Overview

  • Voters are casting ballots across British Columbia in a snap provincial election to choose 93 MLAs, with polls open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 24.
  • Elections BC announced it will hand-count ballots cast on election day, saying short time frames and complex logistics made electronic tabulation impractical for Oct. 24 voting.
  • Paper ballots cast during the advance period and at district electoral offices will still be processed by electronic tabulators and those results are expected to be reported before election-day hand counts are completed.
  • Advance voting produced 891,348 ballots over six days, about 110,656 fewer than the 1,002,004 advance votes in 2024, with Oct. 17 the busiest advance day and notable turnout in Vancouver and Surrey ridings.
  • Absentee and mail-in ballots will not be included in election-night totals and are scheduled for a separate final count from Nov. 6 to Nov. 10, which means official, complete results will be delayed beyond election night and could change outcomes in close races.
