Overview

  • The Conservation Officer Service confirmed on June 16 that the grizzly on Texada Island poses an ongoing safety risk and cannot be moved again.
  • The bear was relocated from Gibsons in early September and from Sechelt in late September, yet each time it returned to Sunshine Coast communities within weeks.
  • On June 10 and 11 the grizzly chased livestock on Texada Island, prompting multiple complaints from residents.
  • Earlier encounters included stalking two hikers near Powell River on May 22 and days-long breaks into boats at Powell River marinas to access bait.
  • Conservation officers are not actively pursuing the animal but say they will intervene if it poses new threats to people or livestock.
