B.C. Coast Storm Eases With New Wind Alerts as Rescues Wrap and Roads Stay Shut

Authorities report a shift to recovery operations following coordinated air and ground rescues.

Overview

  • Environment Canada issued fresh wind warnings Saturday for Metro Vancouver, Vancouver Island and the southern Gulf Islands with gusts up to 90 km/h into Sunday morning, and warned of snowfall on the Coquihalla and Highway 3.
  • Eight people were airlifted with no serious injuries after flash flooding trapped two vehicles near Holberg, with Port Hardy RCMP, Campbell River Search and Rescue, the JRCC and 442 Squadron coordinating the response.
  • Holberg Road and nearby Head Bay Road remain closed due to landslides and washouts, and Western Forest Products says it is mobilizing equipment to clear debris without a reopening timeline yet.
  • BC Hydro says most customers have been restored since Friday’s storm, though several thousand remained without power in parts of the coast and Interior and new outages were reported with Saturday’s high winds.
  • The BC River Forecast Centre downgraded north coast flood warnings to high streamflow advisories across the coast, leaving only the Kingcome River on a flood watch, while Friday’s conditions forced multiple ferry cancellations between Metro Vancouver and Vancouver Island.
