BBVA Foundation recognized eight transformative contributions with €400,000 awards designed to spotlight pioneering work that expands the frontiers of knowledge.

Overview

  • The 17th Frontiers of Knowledge Awards ceremony took place on June 19 at the Euskalduna Palace in Bilbao and was livestreamed by the BBVA Foundation.
  • Since its launch in 2008, the annual awards have granted €400,000 in each of eight categories and 31 past laureates have subsequently earned Nobel Prizes.
  • In basic sciences, Avelino Corma, John Hartwig and Helmut Schwarz were honored for pioneering sustainable catalysts, and the biomedicine award recognized researchers behind GLP-1 therapies for diabetes and obesity.
  • Information and communication technologies prizes were awarded to Anil Jain and Michael I. Jordan for machine learning innovations, and Camille Parmesan won the environmental and climate sciences award for mapping species shifts under global warming.
  • Economics, social sciences, humanities and music awards celebrated breakthroughs in policy design, attitude theory, scientific ethics and contemporary opera composition.
