BBL Unveils Designated Batter and Fielder Rule for Next Season

The optional change aims to add tactical flexibility, reduce workload concerns, attract marquee talent.

Overview

  • From BBL|16, teams may pre‑nominate before the bat flip one batter who will only bat, then swap at the innings break for a nominated fielder.
  • Neither designated player may bowl, while the designated fielder may serve as wicketkeeper.
  • Clubs can forgo the option entirely and name a traditional XI.
  • BBL executive Alistair Dobson says the rule is designed to keep explosive batters on the park and create new strategic dynamics, following broad consultation.
  • The change does not apply to the WBBL at this stage, and figures such as Ricky Ponting, Glenn Maxwell, and Trent Woodhill say it could extend veteran careers and entice returning Test players.
