Overview

  • The six-part series launches on Saturday 3 January with episode one at 9:30pm on BBC One, and all episodes available now on BBC iPlayer.
  • Writer Dennis Kelly adapts The Life Inside by renaming the protagonist Dan, reworking the father figure, and condensing multiple prisons and people into a single on-screen world.
  • The show aims to humanise incarcerated men and sidestep stock gritty tropes by centring philosophical discussions drawn in part from real classroom dialogue.
  • Josh Finan leads the cast, joined by Gerard Kearns, Stephen Wight, Phil Daniels and Samantha Spiro.
  • Filmed in Liverpool, the production includes small cameo appearances by Finan’s family, and Kelly says a second season is possible if there is audience demand and collaborator support.
