Overview
- The BBC confirmed on Tuesday that BBC Three, BBC Scotland and Radio 4 Extra will stop linear broadcasting in spring 2027 and that their programmes will remain available on BBC iPlayer, BBC Sounds and other platforms such as YouTube.
- BBC News director Rachel Jupp has proposed the net closure of just over 100 roles to save about £5.5 million and said she will review further newsroom savings early next year.
- Unions and Scottish officials reacted strongly, with Scotland’s culture minister calling the move to make BBC Scotland online-only 'wholly unacceptable' and performers’ groups warning that lost linear repeats could cut creators’ incomes.
- The closures form part of a wider programme to save £500 million by 2028 that the BBC says may put as many as 1,800–2,000 jobs at risk after earlier rounds of cuts this year.
- The next phase will include staff consultations and divisional reviews, negotiations over commissioning and pay, and scrutiny of how online-only commissioning and YouTube repeats will affect regional output and secondary payments.
