BBC Studios to Develop Live-Action 'Kiki's Delivery Service' Series

The 10-episode project is presented as a 40th‑anniversary tribute that aims to bring Eiko Kadono’s novel to a new global family audience.

Overview

  • The three-way partnership to develop the series was announced Tuesday between BBC Studios Kids & Family, U.K. producer Wheel in Motion and Japan’s Kadokawa Corporation.
  • The adaptation is planned as ten half-hour episodes drawn mainly from the first of Kadono’s six Kiki novels and will focus on the book’s story of a 13-year-old witch starting a delivery service in the port town of Koriko.
  • Screenwriter Irena Brignull is attached to write the series, and all partners say they worked closely with Kadono and Kadokawa to honor the spirit of the original book.
  • Key production details have not been released, including casting, who will voice or portray Kiki’s cat Jiji, filming schedule and a release date.
  • The announcement follows the book’s 1985 publication and the well-known 1989 Studio Ghibli film, and rights-holder involvement suggests future updates will clarify how faithful the live-action show will be and where it will be distributed.
