BBC Puts Radio 1 Dance, Radio 1 Anthems and Radio 3 Unwind on DAB+ Nationwide

Ofcom’s competition review cleared the launches, marking the BBC’s first new national music services since 2002.

Overview

  • The three stations transition from BBC Sounds streams to terrestrial DAB+ and continue to be available on BBC Sounds.
  • Radio 1 Dance and Radio 1 Anthems target younger listeners with curated, presenter-led programming focused on dance and 2000s–2010s hits.
  • Radio 3 Unwind is designed for listeners aged 35–54 with calming classical music and expert-led wellbeing shows, including Dr Sian Williams’ Classical Unwind.
  • Launch plans include a Radio 1 Dance takeover from September 15 featuring Carl Cox’s Radio 1 Essential Mix from Ibiza and a replay of the Radio 1 Ibiza Prom.
  • Ofcom approved these services in July after full competition assessments but rejected a proposed Radio 2 spin-off and extended 5 Sports Extra hours over competition concerns.
