Overview

  • A Dublin High Court jury found in May that the BBC defamed former Sinn Féin president Gerry Adams in its 2016 Spotlight broadcast and awarded him €100,000 after determining the corporation acted without good faith.
  • The court granted a stay on full payment pending appeal, requiring the BBC to pay €50,000 and €250,000 in legal costs while it considered a challenge.
  • In June the BBC confirmed it would not pursue an appeal but, as of August 1, has not paid the remaining €50,000, drawing fresh criticism from Adams and his supporters.
  • Gerry Adams has said he will donate any damages received to charities supporting children in Gaza, the Irish language sector and homeless services.
  • BBC Northern Ireland director Adam Smyth defended the corporation’s editorial process and a spokesperson said total costs will be finalised and payable in due course.
