BBC Content Chief Defends Response to Gregg Wallace Complaints

Kate Phillips says she acted immediately on the concerns that reached her in 2019.

Overview

  • Speaking at the Edinburgh TV Festival, Phillips said she handled two complaints in 2019 without delay and noted reports that a written complaint was made in 2017.
  • An independent Lewis Silkin investigation upheld 45 of 83 allegations against Wallace, largely covering conduct from 2005 to 2018, including inappropriate language, being in a state of undress and one instance of unwanted physical contact.
  • Wallace apologized for using inappropriate language and said he was deeply sorry for any distress caused, while denying the more serious allegations.
  • Wallace and co-presenter John Torode left MasterChef after producer Banijay commissioned the external review, with an allegation of racist language against Torode upheld.
  • The BBC is airing the pre-recorded Series 21 and has edited out two contestants who asked not to appear following the report.
