ÖBB to End BerlinParis Night Train in December After French Subsidy Cut

The French state withdrew funding, leaving the cross-border service financially unviable.

Overview

  • ÖBB confirmed the BerlinParis and ParisVienna Nightjet routes will stop with the 14 December 2025 timetable change.
  • French media reported that annual subsidies worth millions of euros, cited at roughly €10 million, were halted by the Transport Ministry and SNCF.
  • SNCF argued it is required to prioritize profitability as a state-owned operator and cannot sustain loss-making routes for symbolic reasons.
  • Passenger groups launched petitions and demonstrated at Paris’s Gare de l’Est to oppose the cancellations, drawing tens of thousands of signatures.
  • ÖBB will keep other Nightjet services and add 24 new trains, while a daytime BerlinParis ICE of about eight hours remains available.
