Bayern Unveils Fan-Funded Franz Beckenbauer Statue at Allianz Arena

A Kurt-Landauer-Stiftung commission makes the tribute permanent at Bayern's stadium.

Overview

  • The bronze figure, 2.7 meters high (4.2 meters with pedestal) and about 1.2 tons, is 1.5 times life-size on a Bayern-diamond base and was created by sculptor Matilde Romagnoli after a large clay model.
  • The unveiling took place one day after what would have been Beckenbauer’s 80th birthday and roughly 20 months after his death in January 2024.
  • Widow Heidi Beckenbauer attended alongside former teammates and club leaders, including Uli Hoeneß, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and Lothar Matthäus, with many 1990 world champions present.
  • FC Bayern marked the moment with a dedicated merchandise collection, featuring son Joel Beckenbauer as a model for items bearing his father’s name and image.
  • The monument complements ongoing honors that include the retired No. 5, the Franz‑Beckenbauer‑Platz 5 address at the arena and national tributes such as DFB President Bernd Neuendorf’s praise.
