Bayern and Stuttgart Face Off in First Franz-Beckenbauer Supercup

The first match under its new name debuts a redesigned sterling silver trophy under rules that send ties straight to penalties.

Overview

  • Bundesliga champion Bayern Munich and DFB-Pokal winner VfB Stuttgart meet for the inaugural Franz-Beckenbauer Supercup in Stuttgart tonight.
  • The DFL commissioned a 54 cm, 6.5 kg sterling silver trophy from Koch & Bergfeld that features a chromed ball and Beckenbauer emblem insured at around €30,000.
  • A limited-edition black-and-white Derbystar Supercup ball embossed with a Franz Beckenbauer symbol will be used exclusively for this match.
  • The fixture will skip extra time and go directly to a penalty shootout to limit early-season fatigue, with €3 million awarded to the winner and €2 million to the runner-up.
  • While organised supporter groups plan to boycott over the game’s clash with the DFB-Pokal first round, national coach Julian Nagelsmann, DFB sporting director Rudi Völler and Heidi Beckenbauer are expected to attend.
