Bay of Bengal Weather System Weakens to Depression Near North Sri Lanka

Forecasters expect isolated heavy rain across Tamil Nadu’s delta‑coastal belts through Jan. 11, with marine warnings in force.

Overview

  • IMD says the former deep depression has weakened to a depression and is set to cross north Sri Lanka between Trincomalee and Jaffna on Saturday.
  • Orange and yellow alerts focus on delta and coastal districts including Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai and Cuddalore, with very heavy rain possible at isolated spots.
  • Chennai is under a yellow alert with forecasts pointing to light to moderate rain and occasional thunderstorms, while heavier bursts are more likely south and along the coast.
  • Squally winds and very rough seas persist off Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka, with gusts up to 60–65 km/h and waves of 2.7–3.1 meters; fishermen are advised to stay ashore.
  • Meteorologists note January systems of this kind are uncommon, citing roughly 20 such disturbances since 1891 as alerts and track guidance continue to be updated.
