Bay of Bengal Low to Hit Odisha–Andhra Coast Within a Day as Durga Puja Rains Loom

Meteorologists warn of a deepening system now, followed by a fresh circulation next week that could prolong rain through Dashami.

Overview

  • The IMD says the low has intensified and is likely to become a depression before landfall near the south Odisha–north Andhra coast on Saturday.
  • Moderate to heavy showers and thunderstorms are forecast across Kolkata and several South Bengal districts through the early festival days, with heavier spells in South 24 Parganas, East and West Midnapore, Bankura and Jhargram.
  • North Bengal, including Jalpaiguri, Cooch Behar and Alipurduar, is expected to see heavy rain on Saturday, with thunder and lightning possible in Malda and North Dinajpur on September 29.
  • The current system is expected to move inland across south Odisha and Chhattisgarh and weaken by Sunday, while a likely new low around October 1 could renew rainfall through October 2.
  • Sea conditions are rough with squally winds around 40–50 km/h, and the IMD has advised fishermen to stay ashore through September 28; despite showers, crowds have continued visiting Puja mandaps in Kolkata.
