So far, heavy rainfall activity was concentrated over the Western Himalayas and the foothills, particularly Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh.

Overview

  • A low-pressure area formed over the west-central Bay of Bengal on August 17 and is forecast to deepen into a depression before crossing the south Odisha–north Andhra coast around August 19.
  • The IMD has issued an orange alert for Mumbai and its neighbouring districts along with red warnings for multiple states, advising residents to prepare for heavy to extremely heavy downpours.
  • Persistent heavy showers in Mumbai have caused widespread waterlogging, short circuits, tree and wall collapses and triggered a fatal landslide in Vikhroli that claimed two lives.
  • Local trains have faced delays on Central and Harbour lines and airlines including IndiGo, Akasa Air and Air India have issued travel advisories due to waterlogged access routes to airports.
  • Civic bodies, the National Disaster Response Force and state agencies remain on high alert, deploying teams and monitoring reservoir levels near capacity to mitigate flood and landslide hazards during peak rains.
