Bay of Bengal Depression Poised To Become Cyclone Montha, Andhra Landfall Likely Oct. 28

Authorities have activated disaster plans across eastern India as the IMD warns of heavy rain, dangerous seas and strong winds along the coast.

Overview

  • IMD says the depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm by Oct. 27 and a severe cyclonic storm by Oct. 28.
  • Forecasts indicate a probable landfall between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam near Kakinada on the evening or night of Oct. 28 with winds of 90–100 km/h, gusting to 110 km/h.
  • Red, orange and yellow alerts have been issued across Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and Tamil Nadu, including an orange alert for Chennai on Oct. 27 and extremely heavy rain warnings for Coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema on Oct. 27–28.
  • Sea conditions are set to turn rough to very high along the east coast; fishermen have been told to stay ashore, ports have hoisted warnings and the Coast Guard reports guiding about 985 boats back to harbour.
  • Preparedness has been stepped up with the National Crisis Management Committee review, NDRF and armed forces on alert, and Andhra Pradesh officials directed to ready relief and response measures.
