Bay Area Begins 8–12 Week Rollout of Next-Gen Clipper With Tap-to-Pay and Cheaper Transfers

Automatic transfer discounts will reduce costs for riders who connect between agencies.

Overview

  • The Metropolitan Transportation Commission started migrating riders today to a cloud-based Clipper platform that will phase in across more than 20 transit agencies over the next 8 to 12 weeks.
  • Contactless credit and debit cards and mobile wallets are being accepted across agencies, building on BART’s summer launch that now accounts for about 11% of BART trips.
  • The upgrade enables instant value reloads, improves auto-reload reliability, and introduces family account management in the Clipper app.
  • Riders pay full fare on their first agency and receive up to $2.85 off or a free ride on subsequent transfers, with AC Transit adding fare-capping that can lead to free rides after a spending threshold.
  • High demand temporarily overwhelmed the Clipper website and app during upgrades, and officials say riders can tap bank cards or mobile wallets to ride and receive transfer discounts while also advising people to remove cards from wallets to avoid unintended charges.
