Bay Area Arsonist Gets 19 Years for UC Berkeley Patrol Car Firebombing and Oakland Courthouse Attack

Prosecutors said the politically motivated arsons sought to influence government conduct and to encourage copycat attacks.

Overview

  • Casey Robert Goonan, 35, was sentenced on Sept. 23 to 235 months in federal prison after the court applied a terrorism enhancement and referred to the conduct as domestic terrorism.
  • Goonan pleaded guilty in January 2025 to maliciously damaging or destroying property by means of fire or an explosive.
  • Court records say Goonan placed a bag of six Molotov-style devices under a marked UCPD patrol car on June 1, 2024, and days later attempted to firebomb Oakland’s Ronald V. Dellums Federal Building before lighting devices in a planter when confronted by security.
  • Judge White also ordered 15 years of supervised release, $94,267.51 in restitution, and a $100 special assessment, and records note no injuries from the incidents.
  • Investigators said Goonan’s actions were inspired by Hamas and included calls for others to attack campus property, with the FBI, ATF, California’s State Fire Marshal, and UCPD leading the case for federal prosecutors.
