Bavaria’s Wohngeld Rolls Grow as Average Benefit Slips, New Data Show

Officials say many 2023 applications were processed only in 2024, boosting recipient counts in the latest tally.

Overview

  • In Bavaria, 108,790 households received pure Wohngeld at year-end, up 7.6% year over year, while the average monthly entitlement fell by €14 to €289.
  • The Bavarian housing ministry reports that local offices cleared many outstanding 2023 cases in 2024, which may partly explain the higher caseload.
  • Nationwide, about 1.2 million households receive Wohngeld, with roughly 52% pensioner households and about 44% family households.
  • Wohngeld is transferred monthly in advance under §26 WoGG, meaning October 2025 payments are issued at the end of September.
  • The benefit was inflation-adjusted on January 1, 2025 by roughly 15% (around €30 on average), and a federal commission plans to present reform proposals by year-end for potential 2026 changes.
