Overview

• At the end of May, around 8,700 asylum seekers were housed in Bavaria’s Ankerzentren, compared with 10,900 at the same point last year.
• Total reception capacity across all seven Bavarian centers exceeds 12,000 places, leaving facilities operating below capacity.
• The Bamberg Ankerzentrum’s population plunged from 1,500 in May 2024 to just 700 in May 2025.
• Follow-up accommodation for asylum seekers is nearly full at about 90 percent occupancy, with 122,400 of 136,000 places in use.
• Talks between the city of Bamberg and the Bavarian interior ministry are ongoing to determine whether the Bamberg center will continue operating past its planned end-of-2025 closure.
