Overview
- The Bavarian State Paintings Collections will restitute four works identified as Nazi-looted based on findings by the State Museums Agency’s provenance office.
- Two paintings by Franz Sigrist the Elder go to heirs of the former Munich dealership Brüder Lion, “Hl. Anna Selbdritt” goes to descendants of Ernst Magnus, and “Am Wirtshaustisch” was classified as looted with the rightful heirs still being clarified.
- The painting “Junges Mädchen mit Strohhut” by Friedrich von Amerling has been referred to the new nationwide arbitration panel for Nazi-looted art.
- Heirs of Brüder Lion plan to file suit at the Munich Administrative Court claiming the Amerling work, disputing the state’s account that it changed hands in a fair exchange.
- Since February, the collections have added more than 200 works to the Lost Art database as part of an effort to increase transparency and facilitate claims.
