Bavaria Opens Confidential Forensic Exams to Insurance Coverage Starting Nov. 1

The program preserves critical traces for victims who are not ready to involve police.

Overview

  • Hospitals, contracted practices and medical care centers can offer anonymous evidence collection as a statutory health service beginning Nov. 1.
  • Statutory health insurers will reimburse the service anonymously, addressing cost and privacy concerns.
  • Participating facilities can order examination materials from November, with the Health Ministry paying for the kits.
  • Providers must register with their regional legal medicine institute—LMU Munich for Oberbayern, Niederbayern, Oberpfalz and Schwaben, and the University of Würzburg for Unter-, Mittel- and Oberfranken.
  • Health Minister Judith Gerlach called for broad participation to ensure local access across Bavaria; until now, the service existed only at the LMU Munich and Würzburg institutes.
