Bavaria Dig Uncovers Bell Beaker Cemetery and Older Neolithic Well on SuedOstLink Route

Laboratory analysis now begins without delaying the SuedOstLink project.

Overview

  • Archaeologists near Sengkofen (Mintraching, Regensburg district) documented roughly 20–22 crouched burials with grave goods attributed to the Bell Beaker horizon dating to about 2800–2200 BCE.
  • Two double graves were identified, and planned DNA and osteological tests will probe possible kinship and causes of death.
  • Settlement traces including postholes, pits and an earthen oven were uncovered, indicating activity predating the cemetery.
  • A wooden‑lined well likely from 3500–3300 BCE, provisionally linked to the Altheimer culture, yielded exceptionally preserved organic remains including an acorn and an oak leaf.
  • All finds have been transferred to state conservation labs in Munich for radiocarbon, DNA and preservation work, and officials say the discovery—among the largest of its period in Bavaria—will not affect construction timelines.
